Artist Statement:

I consider women’s experiences complex and enriching but at times still dependent on the conditional approval of others.  I am particularly interested in expressing how women are dismissed from the medical profession as “hysterical”, “allusive” and “incapable” of measuring their own body. In CHRONIC, I compared the long-winding road of medical chronic conditions: diabetes, dementia, depression and eating disorders, with the allusive art of graffiti. Graffiti and chronic conditions are both overlooked. In 2013 I started an audio project called On Being a Woman featuring subjects from diverse points of view and backgrounds. One revealing comment many of them made to me was on how isolated they felt while suffering a chronic condition. Their families and doctors had become numb to their plight, leaving them silent. Such quiet suffering moved me to think of how to show their pain.
