STEAM Exhibition

April 5, 2012 - April 7, 2012

Opening Reception: Thursday, April 5, 2012 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the UCF Art Gallery

The STEAM project is presented by the UCF ICubed project and funded by the National Science Foundation and University of Central Florida. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

The initiative has brought together science and arts faculty members and their students to create paintings, sculptures, drawings and posters that illustrate the complex research of genetic coding, theoretical physics and other topics to those that may not readily grasp the ideas.

Participating Art and Design students attend a 3-week long seminar, as part of their course of study, and produce science-inspired art based on the STEM researcher's explanations of science and engineering concepts. During the past two years, research students have met with art students to explain scientific breakthroughs and concepts. The artists, in turn, created tangible artifacts to exemplify the ideas.

East/West A Survey of Contemporary Printmaking

December 1, 2011 - December 18, 2011

The “East/West: A Survey of Contemporary Printmaking” is a printmaking portfolio that reflects and celebrates the pluralistic existence of printmaking practice and printmaking education in the United States. This portfolio showcases 100 of the most prominent printmakers/educators representing every state in the USA. Unlike most portfolios, this project asked participants not to respond to a certain theme but rather asked the artists to embrace their current image making techniques and conceptual concerns. The result is a portfolio of prints that are diverse in image and that embrace and celebrate the tradition and the alternative in printmaking techniques found in lithography, intaglio, woodcut, silkscreen, archival pigment, hybrid, intaglio types, and photo-relief prints.

The artists in the “East/West: A Survey of Contemporary Printmaking” portfolio were chosen based upon their long and distinguished careers as both artists and teachers practicing the art of printmaking in a fashion coined from the tradition of the major midwest universities in the 1960’s –“ the artist/teacher in residence”. This portfolio celebrates these artists as innovators for their continued development of the printmaking medium and their own unique artistic visions as evidenced by their work and continued success as educators. These printmakers have had and continue to have dramatic impacts on printmaking education, their institutions and printmaking workshops.

In addition, the UCF Art Gallery is home to a donation box for the Knights Pantry which helps Knights in need. Help share the joy of giving by contributing non-perishable foods to our donation box at the opening reception or at any time during gallery hours.

Departures VI

August 25, 2011 - September 25, 2011

On loan from the Southeast Museum of Photography, a service of Daytona State College, Departures VI is a juried exhibition which showcases recent photography from graduates of both Daytona State College and the University of Central Florida’s photography program.

The University of Central Florida and Daytona State College have a remarkable partnership that offers students a four-year bachelor’s degree in photography. Departures VI presents work from more than twenty graduates of this program. The diversity of the exhibit and the fresh eye of the graduates makes this show an exciting experience for all who see it.

The profound images of Departure VI are a compliment to renowned photographer Berenice Abbott’s paraphrase, “To chart a course, one must have a direction. In reality, the eye is no better than the philosophy behind it. The photographer creates, evolves a better, a more selective, more acute seeing eye by looking ever more sharply at what is going on in the world.”
